P-pop sensations BINI and SB19 have become the Philippines’ tourism ambassadors, but it’s not a role they just stepped into overnight. Long before the Department of Tourism (DOT) gave them the title, they had already spent years introducing the country to audiences around the world — just in different ways.

For BINI, it has always been about inviting the world to discover the Philippines through its beauty, warmth, and vibrant culture. It’s not hard to think of sunshine, beaches, and the carefree island life when Pantropiko comes on, while their bright, colorful music videos have become visual postcards of modern pop culture. Even their styling is often either inspired by Filipino heritage or made by homegrown designers. Beyond their catalog, the Nation’s Girl Group is deeply committed to advocating for tourism. In 2022, they collaborated with the DOT for their travel series, BINI Road Trip Adventures, which took viewers to various tourist attractions around the country. The group’s enthusiasm for Philippine destinations, aside from their hometowns, has since encouraged fans to explore different provinces and their cultures.

SB19 takes a different route — introducing the country through narratives rooted in the Filipino experience. The P-pop Kings’ discography reflects the nation’s values and stories, with tracks like MAPA celebrating family, Go Up and What? exploring the themes of perseverance and resilience, and VISA drawing inspiration from the problems Filipinos encounter when applying for visas. Off-stage, SB19 never hesitates to put the Philippines on the spotlight, proudly speaking about their roots, whether they’re giving interviews or engaging in international platforms. As early as 2021, they were named the Youth and Sentro Rizal Ambassadors by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), marking a historic milestone in sharing Filipino heritage with the world.

Through their music and influence, BINI makes audiences feel the warmth of Filipino culture, while SB19 inspires pride by sharing the stories behind P-pop and the country. That’s where they differ—and in the same way, complement one another.

In hindsight, their appointments almost feel inevitable. The titles they now have simply made official what many fans had already known and witnessed for years.

How Did BINI and SB19 Become Tourism Ambassadors?

Any artist or celebrity could have been picked to represent the Philippines. Instead, the DOT went with two of the country’s record-breaking P-pop acts. This speaks volumes of just how pop culture and tourism have become more and more intertwined.

For the longest time, tourism-related campaigns have relied on postcard-perfect beaches, breathtaking islands, and the country’s signature hospitality to draw visitors. While those remain as enticing as ever, things aren’t exactly the same anymore. Travelers no longer visit destinations solely because of ads; they get inspired by the artists they follow, the music they listen to, and the stories they encounter online.

The DOT seems to be leaning into this shift, which is why it’s now tapping into something more powerful: fandom. Because, truth be told, fan communities no longer just stream songs these days. They fly out to attend concerts, organize trips, and document and share travel experiences online — turning music into a powerful driver of tourism.

With BINI and SB19 serving as gateways for audiences far beyond Philippine shores, the DOT is leveraging their growing reach to encourage more people to experience the country for themselves.

The Nation’s Girl Group became the first to officially receive the title. DOT Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay announced BINI’s appointment as tourism ambassadors on July 3, with the octet paying a courtesy visit to her office.

“Sometimes, the young people can actually direct a whole generation, a whole government or bureaucracy to go a certain direction, which will connect with a larger population,” said Angara-Mathay. “And we made the right choice.”

“A fresh takeaway from this first meeting is each girl actually represents a province or a town, and they’re very knowledgeable about what is a charming feature of [their province or town],” she added. “I thought [their inputs are] very refreshing, and each girl member has that to bring to tourism.”

Three weeks later, speculation over who would become the second P-pop group to take hold of the title came to an end, when SB19 was revealed as the country’s other tourism ambassador. The quintet shared on social media the “galingbayan” box that they received as a send-off package on July 26 from the DOT—formalizing the announcement—ahead of their historic Lollapalooza set on July 30 (July 31 in Philippine time). The package’s name is a play on the words “galing” and “balikbayan,” with the latter referring to the care packages overseas Filipino workers traditionally send home to their families.

“SB19’s talent is undeniable,” the tourism chief said of the group’s appointment. “Their music is powerful, and so is their influence. They have the reach to connect with fans across the United States, Europe, [the] ASEAN, and beyond. And in the U.S., we’re seeing that influence become something real: Filipino-Americans who grew up watching SB19 online are now booking flights home, some for the first time in years, just to see them perform on their home turf.”

“We’re seeing the same thing across [the] ASEAN,” added Mathay. “Whether it’s a Filipino-American flying halfway across the world or a fan in Taiwan or Bangkok just a few hours away, SB19 is giving people real reasons to visit the Philippines. That’s the kind of reach we want to build on.”

What It Actually Means for SBINI19 to be Tourism Ambassadorsand Why They Deserve the Role

Since SB19 and BINI—collectively called by fans as SBINI19—made headlines for becoming tourism ambassadors, BLOOMs and A’TIN have been filled with excitement over the milestone. But beyond the announcements and celebratory posts lies a bigger question: what does the appointment actually entail?

The title is more than just appearing in promotional materials and saying, “Visit the Philippines.” It’s big shoes to fill as tourism ambassadors will help shape how the world perceives the Philippines. Aside from the traditional practice of headlining campaigns and joining international events and appearances, the role extends further through social media, where travel vlogs, concert stops, and behind-the-scenes content can inspire millions to put the country on their bucket list.

Judged against those expectations, BINI and SB19 naturally fit the role.

BINI’s vibrant image and youthful energy can present the country in a way that feels fun, familiar, aspirational, and relatable, even to younger travelers. SB19, on the other hand, has built their identity around bravery, resilience, ambition, and the Filipino experience, allowing them to connect with people from various walks of life. Carrying these identities, the P-pop powerhouses can reach communities that conventional tourism may never touch.

Besides, BLOOMs and A’TIN already follow where they go, the stories they share, and what they recommend. That influence is what ultimately sets them apart as the new faces of Philippine tourism. Fans don’t simply admire both groups; they follow in their footsteps.

As tourism ambassadors, they won’t just be promoting; they’ll be creating experiences that not only BLOOMs and A’TIN, but hopefully even casuals, can imagine recreating — and actually do recreate themselves.

Then maybe one day, when international fans are asked what inspired them to come to the Philippines, their answer wouldn’t just be the country’s stunning beaches, historical landmarks, or random travel videos they saw on TikTok.

Instead, it might be:

SB19.

BINI.

Or both.
