In “Honey, I’m Home,” James Reid Makes Room for Everyone, Including Himself

“I’m home.” 

It’s amazing how much weight these two words can carry, depending on what phase or season of life you’re in.

For some, being home simply means being at the place where they live. Others might think of a family member, a friend, a romantic partner, or anyone whom they find comfort in. But “home” could also be a feeling — a sense of safety, belonging, or security that doesn’t specifically depend on a person or place.

In Honey, I’m Home, James Reid explores every nook and cranny of what home means to him.

“First, it [is] a person, then I find that home [is] myself by the end of the album,” Reid said during an early-access listening party. “This is the most comfortable I’ve ever [been] with my music.”

The 10 Sweet Spots of Honey, I’m Home

1. Honey, I’m Home (Intro)

Right from the opening track, the OPM hitmaker’s love for R&B already shows. Honey, I’m Home (Intro) sets the tone and the mood for the album—personal, vulnerable, and intimate—with lyrics that feel like a heartfelt message to his loved ones.

“I want it to be [easy on the ears], but if you really listen to it, there’s something underneath.”

2. Attention

For Reid, “where attention goes, love grows.” 

Attention, the lead single of the album, is all about love making you notice the tiniest details, showing how even the littlest things or most ordinary moments feel special when you’re with someone you consider your home.

This song is also probably one where Reid’s musical inspiration shines the most, with him admitting it was one of his “most Michael Jackson songs.” No doubt it immediately reminded me of Justin Bieber, who shares the same influence, from the very first time he played it before us in the studio.

3. All Night (ft. Arthur Nery)

If each track were a part of the house, All Night would be the bedroom. It’s the most intimate and sensual piece off Honey, I’m Home.

The singer-actor teamed up with Arthur Nery, who he said was his first and only choice for the collaboration, to bring in that “late-night, nocturnal, R&B energy.”

“It’s about not wanting the night to end,” Reid said of All Night. “Arthur sounds incredible on this track; I could not think of anyone else.”

4. Traffic

A song that originally started as a joke, Traffic randomly came to Reid during a two-week songwriting camp. But to him, it always meant something more.

“This song is about wanting to be with someone no matter what it takes, no matter the cost,” said Reid. “The world can wait. This is our time.”

5. Sunny Side ft. Luke April

For someone in his 30s, the multi-hyphenate no longer lets anyone dim his light. “Haters gonna be hatin’,” as he so casually told us.

So, when I asked which track best would describe who he is right now, it wasn’t really a surprise that he answered Sunny Side.

“I’ve been in showbiz [for] around [as long as] I have, as young as I started,” said Reid. “I think it’s really gonna mess you up a little bit. It should. Otherwise, there’s something wrong with you. But, yeah, I learned a long time ago that I can’t let other people decide who I am. Once I figured [that] out, I felt untouchable in a sense.”

“It’s (Sunny Side) really saying that I’m not gonna compromise,” he went on. “I put my peace of mind first above everything else, because if I’m not happy in my own head, then what’s the point of anything else?” 

6. Blessed

While he could not care less about the people who don’t see his worth, Reid creates a space in Honey, I’m Home for everyone who willingly opens their doors to him with Blessed.

“It wasn’t just ISSA,” said the Randomantic hitmaker. “There was a lot of love [and] support from my family, my team, my fans. It was very overwhelming, and sometimes, I thought I didn’t deserve it. So, this song is really about gratitude.”

Production-wise, Blessed has a warm and organic sound wrapped in layers of instruments, echoing how welcome and loved all those people make him feel.

7. Indiana

Reid dedicates the whole album to his long-time partner, ISSA. However, this track, Indiana, is what holds a special place in both of their hearts, as it talks about the future child they have always dreamt of having.

“It’s a kind of love that transcends generations: We love you, even when you’re not here. And one day, when we’re gone, that love will still be here,” said Reid.

Indiana, as the singer-actor recalled, took the longest to write among all his tracks since he and his girlfriend really spent their time pouring their hearts into it.

The song likewise features Reid’s favorite lyric, which, according to ISSA, is hers, too: “They try to bury us, but forgot that we are seeds.” It was a line the couple discovered in a book that deeply resonated with them.

8. Richest Man Alive

With this track, Reid conveys the simple message that the best things in life are truly free. Having the right kind of love is what makes you feel not just at home, but the Richest Man Alive.

“If I have this love alone, that’s all I need.”

9. On My Way (ft. ISSA)

Originally a song by ISSA, On My Way tells the story of two people finding their way to each other. It’s about how you go through all sorts of things just to end up with the person you’re truly meant to be with.

In a separate chat with PARCINQ, ISSA shared that writing On My Way was a breeze, as it was inspired by her real-life love story with Reid. However, they later felt that it suited the latter’s album better.

“It just had to be there,” said Reid.

10. Unbecoming

From Honey, I’m Home (Intro), where Reid finds comfort in his loved ones, through eight introspective tracks exploring different versions of home — the 10-track album closes with a soft and reflective Unbecoming, where the OPM hitmaker comes home to himself.

“At the end of the day, home is exactly where you are [and] where you wanna be,” he concluded.

Honey, I’m Home is an album that comes full circle for the multi-hyphenate. Like many other personalities in the spotlight, he constantly had to deal with people’s expectations here and there, while struggling to find where he truly belonged as a half-Filipino and half-Australian. 

For Reid, this album is a resolution — a lesson learned over years of self-discovery. He has not only found a home within himself and the people who make up that space, but is also making sure there is room for everyone else.

“I’ve always been in this place where I’m like, ‘Where do I really fit in?’ And I guess, recently, I’ve kind of come to the resolution that I can be all these things. I can just do it all. I can be who I want to be, and if it means all these different things, then so be it.”
