Have you noticed that when you visit Greenhills Shopping Center lately, half of the toy stores seem to be stocked with Sonny Angels, Mofusand, and Popmart figures?

A couple of years ago, it was all about Funko Pop! and Marvel Legends craze. In the world of collectibles, it’s easy to assume the market is shrinking as certain trends fade. But in reality, it’s just evolving—shifting with the times, welcoming new players, and expanding to satisfy the ever-changing tastes of collectors.

The Market Is Evolving, Not Falling

Funko Pop! has seen explosive growth, but with hundreds of new releases each year, some collectors feel the market is oversaturated. Rumors of millions of dollars in unsold inventory have led to doubts, but this isn’t a collapse—it’s an evolution.

As Funko remains dominant, Popmart, a Chinese company specializing in blind-box toys, is diversifying the scene, offering collectible art for newer generations while complementing Funko’s nostalgic appeal.

Collecting Is About Passion, Not Profit

The debate around whether Funko Pop! should be treated as investments is ongoing. While some collectors flip items for profit, the true joy of collecting lies in passion—owning a “holy grail” figure, exclusive convention Pop!  or completing a set. Popmart’s blind boxes add an element of surprise, focusing on experience rather than value.

Generational Shifts: Funko Pop! for Millennials, Popmart for Gen Z

Funko Pop! resonated with Millennials, offering a nostalgic connection to childhood favorites like Marvel and cartoons. Popmart, however, has found its niche with Gen Z, offering artistically designed collectibles and collaborations with influencers like Lisa of Blackpink and Filipino actress Marian Rivera. This generation values exclusivity and customization, making Popmart’s blind boxes especially appealing.

Popmart’s Rapid Growth

Popmart’s rise has been remarkable, with a reported 62% increase in 2024. Its blind-box format and limited editions have generated global excitement, particularly in Asia. The brand’s collaborations with artists and influencers have expanded its reach internationally, blending art, fashion, and pop culture.

The Power of Blind Boxes

Inspired by Gachapon vending machines, blind boxes tap into our curiosity and desire for exclusivity. The thrill of pulling a rare figure is a key factor behind Popmart’s success. New series, fresh designs, and limited-run figures keep the excitement alive, making the blind-box experience a cornerstone of Popmart’s appeal.

The Resale Market

Though collecting should primarily be about passion, both Pop! and Popmart figures have become investment pieces. Rare items often get flipped for double or triple their original price. While this adds value to the collectible market, the balance between hobby and financial gain will continue to evolve.

Collecting Is About Fandom

The collectible toy market is growing and diversifying, embracing new trends while staying true to its roots. Whether you’re a Millennial devoted to Funko Pop! or a Gen Z diving into Popmart, the core of collecting hasn’t changed: it’s all about passion, discovery, and cultural connection.

From adding to your Pop! collection to searching for that rare Popmart figure, it’s the love for these items and the community they bring together that truly makes the experience special.
