At first glance, you wouldn’t think that Crocs inspired Justine Pablo “Teng” Surisantos to incorporate modular and interchangeable aspects into his designs. Even though the rubber sandals are not his cup of tea, he was drawn to the idea of “Jibbitz,” the small accessories sold separately to let customers express their own personality and taste.
Japanese streetwear is another source of inspiration, with Chitose Abe of Sacai serving as his role model. This influence is evident in his clothes, which showcase impeccable technique and ingenuity, reimagining classic pieces and separates in unconventional ways.
Ultimately, his collection succeeds in blending elements he loves and dislikes into something chic and undeniably cool.
Teng won the top prize at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines Graduation Show. At just 21, he undoubtedly has a bright future ahead.
